Nikka Whisky Celebrates the Pioneering Spirit of Its Founder With Nikka Frontier

A new permanent expression, Nikka Frontier, launches in the UK exclusively available at Majestic

Nikka Whisky has released a new core expression, Nikka Frontier, a lightly peated whisky that was developed as a tribute to the pioneering spirit of Masataka Taketsuru and his legacy.

The new whisky will be exclusively available in the UK at selected Majestic stores across the country and online from this month onwards.

51% of Nikka Frontier is made of malts with a focus on heavily peated whiskies coming from Nikka’s very first distillery, Yoichi situated in Hokkaido. These bring a rich, malty aroma and pleasant smokiness to the whisky with distinctive peaty notes on the palate. To this, Nikka adds its signature Coffey grain components to bring roundness and balance.

 The whisky is bottled at 48% ABV and is non-chill filtered to retain more flavours. As a result, Nikka Frontier offers a rich aroma and deep complexity. The whisky’s character makes it ideal to enjoy in highballs and simple cocktails.

Nikka Frontier is bottled in a 500 ml format. It features the letter N in front (from the logo) and an embossed motif on the back. The motif represents a traditional Japanese “shimenawa”, a sacred twisted rice straw which is placed at the entrance to a shrine. This is a nod to Taketsuru’s family roots in sake brewing. Like sake brewers, Nikka continues this tradition placing the shimenawa over the pot stills wishing for safety and quality. 

Masataka Taketsuru set out for Scotland to master the art of whisky-making. After returning to his home country, he blended what he had learned in Scotland with Japanese craftmanship, laying the foundation for authentic whisky production in Japan.
